Sub-Category Edit Page Help

This page is used to define or make changes to a sub-category. Please complete the following information and click the UPDATE button at the bottom of the screen.

Required fields are shown with a star * next to the field name.

RECORD NUMBER
This number is internally assigned to this sub-category by the store and is never displayed to your customers. It is a unique number that is used to identify this sub-category and it cannot be changed (once it has been assigned). It's shown here for reference purposes only.

ASSIGNED DEPARTMENT
This is the department that this categories shown below are assigned to. This cannot be changed while adding or updating a sub-category.

ASSIGNED CATEGORY*
This sub-category will be assigned to the category selected above. If you wish to assign (move) this sub-category to a different one, please select the new category using the drop down list provided.

NOTE: If you change the assigned category, this sub-category, and all of it assigned products, will be moved to the new category as well.

SUB-CATEGORY NAME*
This field is required and can be up to 100 characters long. Each sub-category WITHIN a single category must have a unique name.

NOTE: in order for sub-category names to fit properly within the store's "skins", we strongly recommend keeping them as short as possible. Using long names may cause wrapping to occur when text is displayed within the skin pages. This may cause certain skin pages to "push down" to make room for the longer text which may result in the skin page not formatting correctly.

THUMBNAIL IMAGE - When the BROWSE Button is Displayed
This thumbnail image will be displayed when a customer is viewing a product list for this sub-category. This field is optional.

If an image has been previously uploaded, this section of the page will show it. If an image has not been, this section will contain a temporary image that says "Image Not Defined". If a broken link appears where the image should display, it means the image file specified could not be found on the server (by exact file name) in the uploads directory of the store.

To add an image, use the BROWSE button to select an image file from your hard drive. It will be uploaded from your computer to the server when you click the UPDATE button at the bottom of this page.

If you want to replace the image shown, use the BROWSE button to upload a new image. It will be sent to the server and replace the previous image when you click the UPDATE button at the bottom of this page.

If you want to remove the image (and not replace it), then check the "Remove" Image box shown to the right of the image. The image will be removed when you press the UPDATE button at the bottom of this page. NOTE: the image file will NOT be removed from the store's upload directory.

Maximum Image Size: We recommend a maximum image size of 150 pixels wide by 150 pixels high. If the image is too large, it will distort the look of your store's pages and cause them to load slowly. If that happens, re-size the image to make it smaller.

THUMBNAIL IMAGE - When BROWSE Button is *NOT* Displayed
This thumbnail image will be displayed when a customer is viewing a product list for this sub-category. This field is optional.

If an image has been previously specified, this section of the page will show it. If an image has not been, this section will contain a temporary image that says "Image Not Defined". If a broken link appears where the image should display, it means the image file specified could not be found on the server (by exact file name) in the uploads directory of the store.

To add an image, enter the name of image file exactly as it exists on your web server. This file MUST be located in the Qstore/uploads directory of your store. The file name is case sensitive and must exactly match the name of the file on the server. DO NOT use spaces or path (directory/folder) names in file name. This linkage assumes the image file is already on the server, or will be uploaded to the server in FTP mode.

If you want to replace the image shown, enter the name of new image file exactly as it exists on your web server.

If you want to remove the image (and not replace it), simply clear this field. When the record is updated, clearing this field will cause the store to NOT display this image.

DISPLAY POSITION*
This field initially shows this sub-category's current "display" position within the sub-category list. If you change this value, it will change where this sub-category appears in the list. Enter 0 to move it to the top of the list. Enter 99999 to move it to the bottom. Enter 15 to insert it between position 10 and position 20.

NOTE: list positions are automatically adjusted after you update a sub-category. The store will re-sequence the list positions to be multiples of 10. That means the first sub-category will receive a list position of "10", and each sub-category's position thereafter will increase by 10.

Example: if you have 5 sub-categories defined, they will be assigned list positions of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50. This numbering scheme makes it easier to insert a sub-category between two existing positions. To insert a sub-category between the first two (positions 10 and 20), you would assign a display position of 15. Actually, you could enter any value from 11 through 19 and it would accomplish the same thing.

TYPE OF HYPERLINK FOR SUB-CATEGORY*
There are several ways a sub-category can be "linked" and the options in this section control how you want that done:

Link to a List of Products: this option allows you to link a sub-category directly to a list of products. Each product listed will link directly to its own product detail information page.

Link to a Single Product: use this option to have a sub-category link directly to a single product's detail information page.

No Link: Sub-Category Shown as Section Title: this option can be used when you want a sub-category to be displayed but not actually link to anything. This comes in handy when you want to insert a "section title" into the sub-category list.

Link to a Static Web Page (address entered below): use this option if you want to link a sub-category directly to a "static" web page elsewhere on your web site or on the Internet. You will also need to provide the FULL URL (full web address) to the static web page by entering it into the field provided.

Link to a Custom Page (HTML page contents entered below): use this option if you want to link a sub-category to a "custom" web page. This custom page will use the current skin to display a sub-category page containing the information you enter in the HTML contents field. The HTML you supply will be inserted into the skin page for this sub-category before it is displayed to the customer. This feature can be used to display a special information only web page that is not supported elsewhere in the store (like a "shipping policies", "privacy statement", or "return policy" page).

TYPE OF SPACER BEFORE SUB-CATEGORY*
Normally, each sub-category is listed immediately after the preceding one (select the "None" option).

However, you may wish the store to insert an empty line, a dashed line, or a dotted line immediately above this sub-category. Make your selection using the radio button options presented.

SUB-CATEGORY TEXT
This field is optional and can be used to display "welcome" text to the customer when the store displays a list of products linked to this sub-category. This optional text will be shown at the top of the page, just above the list of products. HTML may be included in this field.

SEARCH ENGINE META TAGS
When you submit your web site to the search engines for indexing in their database, it is important that your store pages include "Meta Tags". These tags are specially formatted commands that are hidden in the HTML of the store page. Search engines look for these hidden commands and use them for indexing your store's pages.

Note: these tags must be formatted properly in order for the store page to function properly and to be indexed by the search engines.

If you want this store to insert "hidden" search engine Meta Tags into this sub-category's web page, then enter them into the field provided. These Meta Tags will only apply to this sub-category, and they will override any "Global" Search Engine Meta Tags defined for the store.

Leave this field blank if you are not familiar with how these tags need to be formatted or if you want the "Global" Search Engine Meta Tags to be inserted (if any have been defined for the store).
